Math and Science Week Celebration, November 20-24, 2006
This school year's Math and Science celebration introduced a number of initiatives and innovations to have maximum students' participation. The celebration opened with a Science Exhibit at the school lobby last on Monday, November 20. The exhibit, sponsored by the 4 th year - C, featured the projects of selected students from the High School department. Students from the 2 nd to 4th year prepared an art work showing the life and contribution of Mathematicians and Scientists while the 1st year students prepared some poems about math and science. Aside from being very informative, the exhibit also gave the students a chance to showcase their artistic and literary talent.
On Thursday, November 23, the first ever school-wide Egg drop contest was held. The idea of the contest was to design and build the lightest device that would protect an egg from breaking when dropped from the third floor. The students employed some Physics principles such as momentum, impulse and air resistance. There were 23 entries from different high school levels. The devices varied from a simple parachute to a sophisticated contraption made of aluminum cans. Mr. Philip Carpina, Physics teacher and the adviser of the sponsoring class 4 th Yr-C, was overwhelmed by the positive response of the students.
The device with the lowest non-zero score wins the contest. Maureen Ledesma, Dawn Chua, Kristelle Lee and Iris Ong of 4 th Yr -C emerged as Champions with 30.3 points. Luis Uy, Celine Pugoy, Janere Decena and Abigail Javellana got 37.8 points to bag the first runner up; and Jags Aldaba, Benjamin Barcelona and Dennis Dellomes landed second runner-up with 45.6 points. The prizes were also very "cool"- a dozen of large fresh eggs donated by the BOT through Mrs. Dy Kian Bee were distributed.
The celebration culminated on Friday, November 24 with the Math and Science Quiz Bee. This year's format was patterned after "pera-o-bayong" to allow maximum students' participation. The winners from different elimination rounds were grouped in teams composed of students from different year levels. In addition to intermission numbers in between events, there were trivia questions given out to students. The creative and energetic students of the 4 th year -A under the supervision of Mrs. Sherille Dequiña, made this event a really memorable one.
No doubt, a standard was set and the students would surely expect more come next Math an Science week celebration.
